Imagine having no choice but to age in place
(No. 141) Plus, summer breeze, hair plugs, anti-aging workouts, and the celebrity who grills one mushroom at a time
People in prison get old, just like the rest of us — it just happens a little faster, because they don’t have much sunlight, nature, health care, nutritional foods and low-stress social interactions. Here are some wonderful photographs of aging prisoners (this is a free link), along with their stories. And here’s another story about the area of a prison dedicated to older prisoners with dementia. Astonishingly, many of the older prisoners with dementia have no idea what they did to land in prison in the first place. Imagine that.
Grandpas with guitars
The Philippines are famous for sending cover bands out into the world to entertain on cruise ships, in shows, and at bars. This video of older Philippine men shows how they use those skills to have a wonderful time at home. I’m jealous — I’d love to spend an afternoon with these guys.

Learning to live well
Outlive, by Peter Attia, MD, is a wonderful book. I recommend it, with the caveat that some sections are too technical to be easily understand. I just skip those. But, in general, Dr. Attia’s advice for having healthy years after age 60 is very useful. There are things, like the importance of boosting your Vo2 max — a measure of how efficiently your body uses oxygen — that all of us should pay attention to. Dr. Attia advocates that if we take aging seriously, we can take various steps — exercise is one of the most important — to ensure that our later decades are spent with some joy, rather than just fear of not being able to move well. He offers free videos instructions for a series of exercises that everyone can — and should — do over and over. I particularly like toe yoga right now.
Your passport to cheap nips and tucks
Cosmetic surgery can be very expensive in the US. That’s why many people head to Mexico, Turkey or elsewhere to get their neck wattles reduced, or their hairline enhanced. This video of a guy heading to Turkey to get plugs in his dome shows what you get for a dramatically reduced cost (everyone rates the breakfast buffets as excellent).

And here’s a woman traveling to Mexico for a neck job and facelift combo.
Department of retirement
Soccer legend David Beckham seems to be having a minimalist retirement.
