On my pilgrimage to Taos in 2006 I made a point to visit the burial site of one of the several English authors who taught me many mellifluous words.
We had passed through Sante Fe, Taos, and Raton often as a Kansas family, on the road to visit cousins in Albuquerque.
But I hadn’t yet been steeped in the passionate, mystical prose of DH Lawrence. His patron, Mabel Dodge Luhan, held court near Taos, and offered refuge to Lorenzo, and many others. The story goes that while the stonework for the monument was under construction, an argument ensued. Frieda Richthofen Lawrence, the ‘gushing’ bride of untamed Lawrence, and Mabel disagreed about the proper disposition of the Master’s ashes.
Frieda emptied the urn’s contents into the cement mixer, exclaiming, ‘Now I will always know where he is!’
Apocryphal perhaps, but certainly
plausible, given the supreme control each woman wielded at times over Lawrence.
The University of New Mexico runs the site now, and it might be worthy of a visit, if you’re at loose ends in Taos and want to add to your checklist of out of the way attractions. Put it on the roster with Cadillac Ranch, and the Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, Alabama.
Women are made. Men are born. Men will stay children as long as they can … until they suffer the death of a loved one. My own (only) son is keenly aware of what immunocompromised people have endured since 2020 and he has epilepsy. My husband is from Brooklyn. He respects the fact that I need to live in the middle of nowhere bc other people don’t care. Not even my own church.
