after rethinking how i used the word narcissistic in this newsletter (and hearing from several people who questioned it) i realize I misused it. maybe "self-focused" is a better term. but only when talking about solo hiking.

I'm glad that you're developing an interest in one of my favorite pastimes. I don't know what you mean by referring to it as "a narcissistic act"?

Someone asked me yesterday why I referred to hiking as "narcissistic," so I've been thinking about it since then. I appreciate your question. I'm not sure narcissistic is the correct word. What I meant was that hiking alone is a self-reflective, self gratifying, experience that doesn't depend on interacting with others. That seems to be its purpose. But in using that word, I was ignoring all the communal hiking experiences (that I saw in full force on Saturday). And the benefits a person might share with the world as a result of being more connected to nature, or being more relaxed from walking, etc...
